The BackDRAFT
Corporation grew out of its parent company Stiff
Sentences Inc., a company of writers serving clients
worldwide for two decades. Five years ago, Stiff
Sentences became the world’s first company
of writers to achieve ISO 9000 registration. The
protocol that helped secure that honor was a quality-management
system that ensured flawless writing from any
writing team.
The ISO system
was conceived as a set of tools by which writers
could be trained to look back at any draft and
undertake rapid analysis and repair of any inadvertent
weakness. Before long, writers were calling the
system by its descriptive moniker BackDRAFT.
At client request,
BackDRAFT courses were soon developed to share
the novel techniques with professionals working
in industry and government. Taught by veteran
writers and editors of Stiff Sentences, the courses
quickly attracted a wide and loyal following.
To secure the growing business, a new company
was federally incorporated in Canada as The BackDRAFT
Corporation.
Its first
major undertaking was the development of BackDRAFT
Online. In June of 2003 at the annual conference
of the International Association of Business Communicators
in Chicago, the new company launched a completely
interactive, online version of BackDRAFT. BackDRAFT
Online quickly earned a reputation for both intelligence
and practicality. By the end of 2003, students
were using the software in more than 50 countries
worldwide.
